THE ARCHIVES

My research was a long and essential process. For days I explored dusty boxes of classified old photographs, I deciphered faded newspaper cuttings, unrolled old maps and discovered with fascination many hidden and forgotten tales…
In the early stages of my research I started looking at domestic interiors, social and street life in the late 19th century. At that time, photography was still mainly perceived as a medium most appreciated for its ability to realistically capture the world. Interested by the different social background of that time, I observed that the Victorian era was a long period of peace, prosperity and national self-confidence. The best of times was hiding the worst. London was a city of great contrasts. People from the wealthy areas were totally unaware of ‘the other side of life’ in the impoverished East End. Drawn by this century of concealed contradiction, I centered my attention on the Spitalfields area, which used to be one of the worst rookeries in London in 1900.
